Driving Success - Use the Windshield, not the Rearview

Let's talk about steering your business in the right direction. It's a bit like driving a car. You wouldn't just stare into the rearview mirror the whole time, would you? That's a surefire way to end up in a ditch! No, you keep your eyes on the road ahead, where all the action is.

When running a business, monthly or quarterly reports are great for giving you a snapshot of where you've been... confirmation of success. But when you're trying to drive outcomes, it's like looking in the rearview mirror. To really move forward, you need something more: the Scorecard.

The Windshield

Think of the Scorecard as your windshield. It helps you see where you're going, not just where you've been. Sure, reports tell you if you've hit your goals, but Scorecarding is like having GPS for your business, tracking the steps that lead to success.

Let's switch gears for a second and talk sports. Imagine if your favourite team only cared about wins and losses while in the middle of a game or match. Would they really improve? Would they know if they're actually winning? Not likely. But when they start focusing on the details—like turnovers, accuracy, or goal percentages—that's when you see real progress.

It's all about measuring what matters. Sure, reports have their place, but to stay ahead of the game, you've got to dig deeper. That's where the EOS Scorecard comes in. It's like having a coach in your corner, helping you fine-tune your execution and hit your goals.

Activities vs Outcomes

Reporting is like looking at the final score of a game. It tells you if you won or lost, but it won't give you insight into how you got there. Scorecarding, on the other hand, is like analysing the game play-by-play. It tracks all the little moves and decisions (activities or inputs) that ultimately determine the outcome.

And here's the beauty of it: when you start paying attention to those little details, you can make real-time adjustments to improve your game. For example, maybe you notice that turnovers are killing your team's chances of winning. With that insight, you can focus on tightening up your defence and protecting the ball better.

Or maybe you realise that your accuracy is off the charts, but you're still coming up short on points. That's a sign that you need to work on your shot selection and make sure you're taking advantage of every opportunity to score.

The point is, when you start Scorecarding, you're not just passively observing your business – you're actively managing it. You're identifying areas for improvement, setting goals, and holding yourself accountable for making progress.

So, next time you're steering your business toward success, remember – keep your eyes on the road ahead. And if you need a little help navigating, you know where to find me.
